A Personal Perspective-National Autism Awareness Month

National Autism Awareness Month, Bjlane Art

Title: Upside-Down and Backwards

Medium: chalk and pastel on pavement copyright Bjlane

The Journey continues . . .

Sometimes my life seems turned upside-down and backwards. The pieces just don't seem to fit. Even when I try to unravel the problems that arise, it seems there are roadblocks and stop signs.

In this chalk art piece I created a visual icon of the upside-down and backward world that I have experienced with my own autistic daughter. This boy (a friend's autistic son) is portrayed in 3 different portraits. Each one is viewed from a different angle, and each one has different hues of color. A sweet face looks with one eye, then two. The mouth is silent in 2 views, and then partly open and ready to vocalize in the last. In order to truly enjoy the piece, one needs to move around it and view it from different angles.

Living, loving and supporting my autistic daughter, I step forward and backward, looking right-side-up and up-side-down, looking for beauty, color, and expression of love between the daily challenges.

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it. Michael Jordan Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/obstacles.html
